What is ADHD?
A combination of persistent problems, such as difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior. Children with ADHD may also struggle with low self-esteem, troubled relationships and poor performance in school.
There are 3 subtypes of ADHD: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive, and combined.
Inattentive Signs and symptoms:
- failing to pay close attention to details
- makes careless mistakes on schoolwork
- trouble staying focusing on tasks or play
- appears to not listen
- difficulty following instructions
- trouble organizing tasks
- avoiding tasks that require focused mental effort
- frequently losing items
- easily distracted
- forgetful
Hyperactivity and Impulsivity Signs and symptoms:
- fidgeting or squirming in seat
- difficulty staying seated
- on the go or in constant motion
- has trouble playing quietly
- blurts or answers or is interruptive
- difficulty waiting for his/her turn
