What is ADHD?

A combination of persistent problems, such as difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior. Children with ADHD may also struggle with low self-esteem, troubled relationships and poor performance in school.

There are 3 subtypes of ADHD: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive, and combined.

Inattentive Signs and symptoms:

  • failing to pay close attention to details
  • makes careless mistakes on schoolwork
  • trouble staying focusing on tasks or play
  • appears to not listen
  • difficulty following instructions
  • trouble organizing tasks
  • avoiding tasks that require focused mental effort
  • frequently losing items
  • easily distracted
  • forgetful

Hyperactivity and Impulsivity Signs and symptoms:

  • fidgeting or squirming in seat
  • difficulty staying seated
  • on the go or in constant motion
  • has trouble playing quietly
  • blurts or answers or is interruptive
  • difficulty waiting for his/her turn
